For hundreds of years it has been theorized that individuals born on the same day of the same year may lead remarkably similar lives. One well-documented case is that of King George III, who shared a birthday with a commoner named Samuel Hemmings (June 4, 1738). Both men were married on the same day and died on the same day.
In November of 1973, paranormal columnist Allen Spraggett wrote an article on astral twins, in which he lamented that the only way to settle the question of whether astral twins exist would be to collect personal data from several hundred cases and run them through a computer to see if any extraordinary similarities showed up. Such a project would have been difficult to accomplish with the technology of 1973. Thanks to modern software programs, this is no longer the case.
While several small-scale experiments on astral twins have taken place, with varying degrees of success, none of them definitively settled the question. Journal of the Bizarre intends to settle this age-old debate once and for all, in what we hope will be the world's largest astral twin experiment to date. And we want you to be a part of it!
We have compiled a detailed but simple survey of 100 specially chosen questions, designed to measure both key and minor events and details of a person's life. The survey appears at the end of this post, and participants are urged to copy and paste the questions and the answers in the body of an email (not as an attachment) and send them to us at astraltwinproject@yahoo.com, putting in the subject line your year, month, and day of birth (and the time of birth, if known) in the following format:

Your email will NOT be opened until we have found your "twin". Once we have found your twin, answers will be compared, with each survey question assigned a certain weight, ranging from 1-3 points (to preserve the scientific integrity of the survey, we cannot disclose the exact details of our point system). If both you and your astral twin score 30 or higher on the survey, we will flag this as a "match". To further verify the results, each match will be asked to provide identity verification (read the FAQ below to learn why this is necessary) and to provide more detailed explanations to questions for which there is a matching answer from your astral twin. You will only be contacted if both you and your twin have striking similarities.
Before you decide to take part in our astral twin experiment, please read the following FAQs to ensure the accuracy and validity of our research.
1. What happens if I don't use the proper year/month/date format in the subject heading of the email?
Your email will be deleted unread. Since we anticipate between 100,000 and 500,000 replies, our email storage space is at a premium, and we cannot waste storage space on emails that fail to adhere to the guidelines. The format is required because that is how we will find your twin.
2. Can I include additional information in my email?
No. Please stick to the survey questions. If your astral twin has provided matching answers, then and only then will you be contacted to provide a more detailed response. Because of the enormity of this project, we ask that those who have additional questions or comments use the email address annanewburg@yahoo.com, and not our Astral Twin Project email address.
3. How does the scoring system work?
The survey questions are weighted so that we can differentiate between minor coincidences and major coincidences. If two astral twins both have a pet dog, for instance, that is a minor coincidence. If they have both had their gall bladders removed, however, that is of more significance. Our scoring system has been developed after several months of research and is determined to measure both minor and major coincidences in varying degrees.
4. Can I remain anonymous?
Absolutely, but only for the first phase of the project. If your astral match has provided remarkably similar answers to certain questions, you will then be asked to verify your identity (Phase 2) and possibly provide additional fact verification (Phase 3). We don't foresee many people making it to Phase 3, however.
5. How can you be sure that someone won't try to "game" the system or cheat?
We anticipated this as a major concern. Some people may be tempted to cheat by using multiple email accounts with different names. This is why we have to verify the identity of those whose answers are remarkably coincidental to those of his/her astral twin. In exceptional cases (twins who have abnormally high rating scores), additional information will be requested for fact verification.
4. Why can't I send in my survey as an email attachment?
Emails with attachments from unrecognized senders are often filtered out as spam.
5. How do you plan on protecting my privacy?
We are aware that many people will be hesitant to divulge the answers to 100 questions, some of which may be extremely personal. This is why we will never ask for any sensitive information (home address, phone number, personal contact information, full legal name, name of employer, income level, etc.) during Phase 1. In addition, we anticipate that there is between a 70% and 80% chance that your email won't even be opened or read; we estimate that no more than 30% of respondents will make it to Phase 2. Your email will only be opened in the event that someone else shares the same date of birth as well as the same birth year.
6. Will I be able to talk/communicate with my astral twin?
Those who make it to Phase 2 will be contacted and informed that we have found their astral twin, but only if there are similar responses to survey questions. "Twins" (those sharing your birth date and year) who have nothing significant in common with each other will not be contacted. If we do decide to contact you, you will be asked if you'd like the name and email address of your astral twin. If both parties say "yes", then this information will be provided. If you and your twin talk to each other and find any remarkable similarities, please contact either zendog64@yahoo.com or annanewburg@yahoo.com and let us know. We may be interested in profiling you on our website at a later date.
7. What if your inbox is full?
We've taken precautions by reserving additional email accounts. If and when our inbox is close to getting full, we will announce an alternate email address on Journal of the Bizarre, as well as on our Twitter feed (@bizarrejournal).
8. How long will it be before you publish the results of the experiment?
It could be weeks or it could be months, depending on the volume of responses we receive. Bear in mind that we only have a full-time staff of two. However, we have enlisted the help of a handful of volunteers who will assist us in twin-matching if the need arises. In the event that we are overwhelmed by responses, we will announce a call for additional volunteers.
